Positioned nearly ninety kms. north west of San Jose, Costa Rica, you will find the magnificent Arenal Volcano. It is in the province of Alajuela in the small town of La Fortuna. Arenal Volcano is known as the most active volcano in the country of Costa Rica. Specialists consider the Arenal Volcano as the youngest and also the most active mountains in all of Costa Rica.
Arenal has been considered a volcano since the 19th century, even though in those times it had other names such as Costa Rica Volcano and Rio Frio. Some experts say that the volcano is over 4000 years old. This part of Costa Rica was new up until 1937, when a few explorers reached the peak that year.
The most significant explosion of the Arenal Volcano took place in 1968 following around 400 years of inactivity. That explosion damaged the whole town of Arenal, and took the lives of 87 inhabitants. It destroyed over 232 sq. kms. and kept erupting for a number of days. The explosion was so powerful that it created three brand new craters. From the time of this infamous eruption, the Arenal Volcano has continued to be active and you can see small explosions very frequently, mostly at night.
The Arenal Volcano is known to be a very well-visited tourist spot, the majority of them take pleasure in seeing the nightly eruptions not to mention the very popular hot springs. The most well-visited hot spring near La Fortuna is Tabacon. Arenal Volcano is one of the seven wonderful volcanoes that tourists can visit while in Costa Rica.
